Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

june13workshop

***UPDATE: This workshop has been moved to Sunday, August 8th. Same time, same place, same food!***

This workshop is for all you Vancouver Island folk, or those of you who might be on the Island in June. Being held at Tria Culinary Studio on Sunday June 13th and brought to you also by Hans Peter Meyer, we’ll be shooting some beautiful creations from Tria’s Kathy Jerritt including Tuna Poke on a sesame crisp and Mixed greens with a beet carpaccio and whipped goat cheese.

As usual you’ll learn step-by-step how to set up for food shots, how to use your camera’s manual settings and achieve that sought after depth of field in food photography, as well as some basic food styling tips and a set of workshop notes to take away. This is a first - Jackie is offering an additional photo critique for every person who registers for this workshop: email 1 photo to Jackie that you take either at the workshop or on your own afterward, and she will critique it, giving you feedback and constructive criticism. Offer expires June 27th, photo must arrive by this date.

There’s also an optional lunch that will be prepared by Kathy Jerritt of Tria: Savoury Crepes filled with house smoked salmon, creme fraiche, sweet red onion jam and fresh arugula with Nature’s Way Farm greens. Delicious!

And if you haven’t been to Tria Culinary Studio/Nature’s Way Farm…it’s beautiful!

Wrap-Up: Food Photography 101 at Irashi Grill

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

January found me teaching another Food Photography 101 workshop to another group of great local food bloggers. This one was held at Irashai Grill (follow Irashai on twitter here)with the help of their fabulous PR and social media maven Danielle, and of course we had to stay for lunch after which was delicious, as always!

I love all the food bloggers I’ve met through these workshops - they’re all so curious and eager to learn; it’s so awesome! And check out their blogs:

Ethnic Eats and Degan Beley

Fine Lime Designs

Darryl Hodgins

Daily Unadventures in Cooking

The Reluctant Chef

Shermans Food Adventures

Community Kitchens website and blog

And what happens after the workshop always cracks me up: we sit down to eat in a few of the booths, but out come the cameras, putting their workshop knowledge to the test! You can also see some of the bloggers who posted their pics afterwards.

My December Food Photography Workshop…An afternoon with foodies!

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

It’s always amazing to me how fast 2 hours goes by when I’m in a room full of foodies. Add cameras to the mix, and the little ‘ah ha!’ moments start coming out. I love it.

What I don’t love is the end of the 2 hours coming on so fast I don’t have time to take any video with my Flip…though some might argue what I did have time to catch was the best part: dessert!

We were lucky enough to be hosted at Campagnolo for the workshop, my local watering hole, and it just happened to be their 1 year anniversary that day. Happy Anniversary Campagnolo! Thanks again for everything! Most of us stayed after the workshop for lunch which included crispy ceci (fried chickpeas with mint & a touch of chili spice), and some delicious traditional Italian-style sandwiches.

Thank you also to all the fabulous foodies and food bloggers who attended (and be sure to check out their blogs!):

Eagranie from The Well Tempered Chocolatier

Shannon from Bakergirl Creations

Cassandra from Good Life Vancouver

Ben & Suanne from ChowTimes

Nolwenn from ABC Cooking

Liz from Bits n Bites

Oana from Ian and Oana *also see Oana’s post on the workshop here!

and last but not least - Brenda! (aka @mightyvanilla)

The next workshop is set for Saturday January 9th, 2010..details coming later this week, and email me if you’d like to reserve a spot! As of today there at 6 spots remaining.

Calling All Food Bloggers! Thinking about improving your photo skills?

Monday, November 9th, 2009

*Update as of November 25th: the workshop has reached it’s limit. If you would like to receive info about future workshops, the next one happening in the New Year, please leave a comment/send me your email address: info@jackieconnelly.com

Last month, as part of the Sustenance Festival, I held a food & beverage photography workshop at The Roundhouse in Yaletown. Attendance to this first workshop filled up so so quickly, we had to add a second one, which also ended up being full! Danno, our trustee volunteer that day, took some photos; you can see them all here. So now, prior to your holiday baking & hours spent in the kitchen, back by popular demand is:

Roundup ~ Food Photography 101 Workshops at The Sustenance Festival

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Until October 15th there’s a fabulous thing happening at The Roundhouse Art & Recreation Centre called The Sustenance Festival: Feasting on Arts & Culture. Directly from their press release:

” The Roundhouse, Get Local (a partnered project of FarmFolk/CityFolk and the Vancouver Farmers Market) and the BC Farmers’ Market Nutrition and Coupon Project are proud to present SUSTENANCE: Feasting on Art & Culture. A first time, unique celebration, SUSTENANCE Festival starts on Thursday, October 1 and culminates on World Food Day: October 16th. SUSTENANCE endeavours to connect the communities of art, culture, and food security. From global to local, from historic to present day, the art and culture of food will be something everyone can feast on.”

If you head down to The Roundhouse and poke your head in The Exhibition Hall you’ll see the entire space filled with art, including some of mine. And, on a more interactive level, I offered two Food Photography 101 workshops and for a couple of hours we chatted tips, techniques and shot some food. It was a great! I also met a couple of food bloggers, one of which Diane who posted her thoughts on her blog Global Peasant. Here are some more shots from the workshops taken by the best volunteer coordinator (and volunteer!) I’ve ever met; Danno, you’re awesome, thank you. Thanks to all those who came down to give it a shot (no pun intended!); I had a blast and I hope you did to.

To culminate both workshops, here’s some links to Food Photography 101 posts I guest-wrote for Bakergirl Creations: The Technical, The Creative and The Resources.

And I’m curious to learn if food photography (in a workshop like this) is something all you food bloggers (or any other type of foodie) would want to learn more about. If so, please fire me an email or leave a comment with your thoughts, because we could totally do this again, and more in-depth.
