I’ve Got (a lot of) Lettuce!
In my continued attempt to grow my own food I’m a few weeks in and things are moving right along. My roma and beefsteak tomatoes are still inside, soaking up the sun on a high windowsill; I’m unsure if it’s warm enough to move them outside just yet. However others have not held back; maybe I’m being too cautious?
The most fun part is that my lettuce has sprouted! But the bad news to go along with that is that my over zealousness in seeding has erupted in waaaay too many sprouts waaaay too close together. Plus I planted a few already started small plants, which in hindsight was really out of excitement, not out of necessity. So, I’m researching how and when to thin the sprouts; apparently best to wait until they’re about 3″ tall, so not too much longer now.
And then there’s my beans and carrots. I planted the seeds 9 days ago and recently I went down to water and found these! I know, you’ve got to look pretty close to see anything more than dirt, but for a first-time gardener this is pretty cool!
And then there’s some things in my garden that…well…leave me wondering. There’s these (below), which look suspiciously like my lettuce sprouts, but they’re a good 6′ away from where I planted lettuce, so that is perplexing. This real estate is future home to my tomato plants, so these little guys might get an eviction notice before the month is out.
And something seems to think my zucchini’s leaves are a buffet of sorts. Hmm. Off to West Coast Seeds! They say common pests for this plant are squash bugs, squash vine borers and striped cucumber beetles. Basically remove and destroy, but I’ve never seen any bugs on them. Will keep checking.
Next on the garden to-do list: buy a watering can (bucket, not helpful), cheat and buy cilantro, more basil and a few other herbs already started. Oh, and order more sunshine.
